Clearing your cache
Thursday, 27 April 2006

Most internet browsers employ caching - the process of storing files locally (i.e on your computer) so that the second or third time you request a file - the browser can access your local cache - thus making your internet browsing experience faster.

Hence clearing your cache may be a necessary task after your web developer has made changes to your website.

To do this:

Internet Explorer
1. Click on the "Tools" menu (Note on Internet Explorer 7 this is on the right hand side of your browser) then on "Internet Options"
2. This will open a window with 7 Tabs, it should default to the "General" tab
3. In the middle of this window there is a section called "Temporary Internet Files".  Click on the button that says "Delete Files"
4. Click ok.

Firefox
1. Click on the menu: "Tools" - > "Options"
2. This will open a window with 5 buttons running down the side. Click on second button  marked "Privacy".
3. On the right hand side click the last option "Cache".  This will highlight this section.  Click the clear button.
4. Click "ok"

Safari
1.  Click on the menu  'Safari' -> 'Empty cache...'
2.  Click on 'Empty'.

Please note that some your ISP (Internet Service Provider) may also employ a "proxy" - which may also cache copies of files for a period of up to 24 hours.  If this is the case - you may need to contact your ISP or try checking your changes at a later time.
